Rockfish restaurants get busy so we recommend booking a table in advance, the good news is availability and booking can be done on their website directly.
We reserved a table and got an outside terrace spot with wonderful views over the harbour. Rockfish menus are large - covering the whole table - but not overwhelming and the friendly staff are there to talk through the options and what the catch of the day is. We ordered drinks first and selected the Blood Orange soda from the extensive Fever Tree range and a glass of Champagne, because, why not! This gave us some time to review the menu and choose our lunch. We went for the Brixham Hake and eponymous Rockfish itself.
While we were waiting for our main courses to arrive, local celebrity Sammy the Seal made an appearance in the waters below the terrace. He looked around but didn't stay for long, wonderful to see though.
Our main courses were delivered in good time. The Brixham Hake comes with either salad, or unlimited chips, and glorious homemade tartare sauce and pickles. Hake is a great alternative to cod: fresh, local & sustainable. It's similar in appearance with a slightly smaller flake and a touch more flavour than cod. The chips were as good as any and a second (free) portion was indeed ordered and eaten!
The other main was the Rockfish itself. We received two Rockfish fillets, these come grilled for a lighter finish than batter. Drizzled over the top is a butter, made from salted limes, spices, lime juice & coriander. The spiced butter is full of flavour and delicious, it doesn't overpower the fish but does mean your don't get to taste just the fish on it's own. This main also comes with salad or chips, we picked salad to go with the grilled Rockfish but ended up sharing the chips of course.
Main courses come with free still or sparkling water too, which is always welcome. If you are not a fish fan there are vegetarian and chicken burger and various sides on offer, but not a lot else. There is a children's menu for smaller portions.
The large menu and ever changing catch from the Rockfish fleet means there are plenty of reasons to return - or try one of the other Devon based Rockfish restaurants.
The total for our lunch came to £45.80.
