A Bright Future: Paignton Zoo Secured by New Investment

The uncertainty hanging over two of our region's most beloved landmarks has finally been lifted, bringing a wave of relief to staff, visitors, and conservationists alike.

After a period of financial concern that saw the Wild Planet Trust seeking urgent investment, it has been officially confirmed that both Paignton Zoo and Newquay Zoo have a secure long-term future. In a landmark deal, the Dutch leisure giant Libéma will take ownership of both sites effective from January 2, 2026.

For locals and tourists who have visited these sites for generations, this is the best possible news to start the year. The transition ensures that these vital community assets will not only stay open but are positioned to flourish under experienced new leadership.

Expert Hands at the Helm

This move marks Libéma’s first venture into the UK market, and they arrive with a sterling reputation. As owners of the Netherlands' most visited wildlife attraction, Safaripark Beekse Bergen, along with three other successful zoos, Libéma brings a wealth of commercial expertise and a proven track record of revitalizing zoos facing financial challenges.

"Libéma shares Wild Planet Trust’s dedication to animal welfare and conservation," the Trust shared in a statement. "This transfer guarantees our long-term future, meaning our vital conservation, education, and breeding programmes can flourish for many years to come."

What This Means for Visitors

The most important takeaway for the public is that it is business as usual. Both zoos remain open with no interruptions to opening hours or visitor access. Families can continue to visit their favorite animals, and schools can proceed with their educational trips knowing the institutions are on firm financial footing.

A Continued Commitment to Conservation

While the ownership is changing, the heart of the zoos remains the same. Libéma is deeply committed to global conservation, currently supporting 30 initiatives through their foundation, Stichting Wildlife.

The Wild Planet Trust will continue to exist as a separate charity, shifting its focus entirely to conservation projects. The Trust has already indicated its intention to collaborate with Libéma on future scientific and breeding initiatives, ensuring that the legacy of research and wildlife protection established in Devon and Cornwall continues to grow.

A New Chapter

This investment is more than just a financial lifeline; it’s a vote of confidence in our region’s tourism sector. By securing the future of Paignton Zoo, Libéma is protecting hundreds of jobs and ensuring that these centers for education and wildlife wonder remain a cornerstone of Westcountry life for decades to come.
