One of Devon’s most iconic family attractions is set to roar back to life this year. Following a period of closure, the Trago Family Fun Park at Newton Abbot has officially been taken over by South West leisure specialists Play Leisure, with a grand reopening scheduled just in time for the Easter holidays.
The move marks a significant transition for the site, as Play Leisure takes over the remainder of the leisure park from Trago. Leading the venture is Exeter-based Managing Director Matthew Conridge, a Devon native who views the project as a personal mission: “I used to come to Trago’s Fun Park as a child, and like so many local families, I have fantastic memories of days spent here,” said Conridge. “I didn’t want to see it stay closed. This place is part of Devon’s story. We’re incredibly proud to be bringing it back to life and ensuring a new generation can make those same memories.”
What’s Returning?
Fans of the park will be relieved to hear that the new management intends to bring back the full roster of classic attractions. Families can expect the return of:
-
All classic rides across the Family Fun Park.
-
The World-Famous Model Railway, a staple for generations of visitors.
-
Splash Adventure, which is slated to reopen as the weather warms up.
While Play Leisure focuses on the main park attractions, the Trago Steam Railway will remain under the direct operation of Trago Mills and its dedicated staff. Representatives from the railway expressed high spirits regarding their new neighbours, stating they "can't wait to see what Play Leisure have in store" and hope to "collaborate in the future to make the site fantastic."
A Boost for the Local Economy
Beyond the nostalgia, the reopening is being hailed as a win for regional tourism and employment. The takeover signals a fresh wave of investment for the Newton Abbot site, supporting local jobs and providing a much-needed boost to the South West’s leisure economy.
Play Leisure has already begun a program of "ongoing improvements" behind the scenes. For those who want a sneak peek at the progress, the company has announced they will be sharing updates and behind-the-scenes footage on TikTok as the countdown to Easter begins.
Looking Ahead
While specific opening dates and launch promotions are still under wraps, the message to the community is clear: the fun is coming back!
As the official announcement concluded: "The reopening represents more than just the return of a family day out. It signals renewed confidence, investment, and opportunity for the local economy."
