Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot is a picturesque market town located in the heart of Devon. It is known for its historic market race course, train station, friendly community and access to Dartmoor.
One of the must-see attractions in Newton Abbot is the St. Leonard's Tower. This Norman tower is the last remaining structure of a castle that once stood in the town. It is an excellent spot for history lovers to explore, with informative signs and displays that provide insight into the town's rich history. Check opening times on the website below.
Nature lovers will appreciate Decoy Country Park and beautiful Dartmoor National Park, which is just a short drive from Newton Abbot. Dartmoor offers stunning scenery, from rolling hills to moorland, and is a great place for a peaceful walk or hike.
If you are interested in culture, then you must visit the Newton Abbot museum. The flagship project, delivered by Newton Abbot Town Council with generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and others, has to be Newton’s Place. It’s a £2.2 million reimagining of a redundant Victorian church which has now become an amazing museum and community hub, admission to which is completely free!
For a spot of retail therapy, head to the town centre, where you will find an array of shops, cafes, and restaurants. Newton Abbot is home to Austins, a traditional department store, now operating from a number of large units near St. Leonard's Tower.
Every year Abbfest hosts a wonderful weekend full of live music, locally produced beer & cider, chef demonstrations and a food & craft market full of local artisan producers
Another attraction in the town is the Bradley Manor, a medieval manor house with beautiful gardens. The house has been restored to its former glory, and visitors can enjoy a guided tour of the property, which includes a library and a Great Hall. There are restricted opening times, check the National Trust website for details.
Whether you are looking for history, nature, culture, or simply a relaxing break, this Devonshire gem has much to offer.
