Discover Art, Heritage and Family Fun at The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon This Summer

If you're visiting North Devon this summer, a trip to the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon offers a fascinating mix of art, local history, photography and hands-on family activities – all with free admission to its major exhibitions.

Explore North Devon Through the Lens

Currently on display until 20 June, This Is Me! Documentary Photography Open 2026 celebrates the people of North Devon, past and present. The exhibition combines contemporary submissions from local residents with historic portraits by renowned photographer James Ravilious and work by GCSE students from Pilton Community College. The result is a compelling snapshot of community life across generations.

Celebrating 60 Years of Resurgence

Running until 18 July, The Art of Resurgence: Celebrating 60 Years of Resurgence explores the story and visual legacy of the influential environmental and cultural magazine. Co-curated with The Resurgence Trust, the exhibition features artwork from contributors across six decades and is accompanied by a programme of talks and workshops inspired by nature, creativity and sustainability.

Highlights include a special talk by internationally respected author and speaker Satish Kumar on 5 June, alongside creative writing and herbal medicine workshops throughout June.

Summer Exhibition: Sir Alfred Munnings and Exmoor

Opening on 4 July, Sir Alfred Munnings: Exmoor Through the Seasons showcases paintings created during the artist's time living in Withypool during the Second World War. Visitors can enjoy evocative scenes of Exmoor's landscapes, people and famous ponies, alongside extracts from Munnings' diaries and poetry that reveal his deep connection to the moor.

The exhibition opens with a free family-friendly celebration day on Saturday 4 July, featuring activities for all ages.

Family Activities During the School Holidays

Families can enjoy Curious Creators, a series of free artist-led workshops taking place every Wednesday from 29 July to 26 August. Inspired by the Munnings exhibition, these drop-in sessions offer creative activities for children and adults to enjoy together.

Sketch and Paint Across North Devon

For adults looking to develop their artistic skills, the museum's En Plein Air programme runs every Saturday throughout August. Guided by experienced artists, participants can sketch and paint in Barnstaple and on Exmoor, drawing inspiration from the same landscapes that captivated Munnings himself.

Discover Local Archaeology

History enthusiasts won't want to miss the Museum's Annual Symposium on 13 June, which explores discoveries from the Potted History archaeology project and showcases new research into Barnstaple's past.

With free exhibitions, inspiring events and activities for all ages, The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is an ideal addition to any North Devon day out this summer.
