Finch Foundry
Okehampton
Finch Foundry is the last working water-powered forge in England.
The doorway to Dartmoor's industrial past. Enter Finch Foundry to experience the sights, sounds and smells of three thundering water wheels powering massive hammers, shears and sharpening stone. These fuelled one of the South West's most successful edge tool factories which, at its peak, produced around 400 edge tools a day. Get an insight into the life of workers in the 19th century and learn about the enterprising Finch family.
When you've had enough of the hardships of Victorian industry, you could enjoy a stroll through the cottage garden.
The small and compact cottage garden at Finch Foundry has beds and borders. In the spring there are daffodils and other spring bulbs decorating the borders. As the sun begins to warm the ground a wide range of plants and flowers begin to shoot. The woodland birds can be heard singing in the trees blooming with blossom.
Tom Pearse’s summer house is a place to sit rest and unwind and soak up the fresh air and enjoy the natural world around.
