Instow Beach
Bideford
Instow Beach in North Devon is a peaceful, wide-open stretch of golden sand where the rivers Taw and Torridge meet the sea.
Sheltered by the surrounding estuary, the beach has an unusually calm, gentle feel, making it a favourite spot for families, dog walkers and anyone seeking a quieter alternative to the region’s better-known surf beaches. At low tide, the sands seem to go on forever, revealing rippled flats perfect for strolling, beachcombing or letting dogs run free. The views are a real highlight: across the water sits the charming village of Appledore, with its pastel cottages and fishing boats creating a picture-postcard backdrop.
Instow is also home to North Devon Yacht Club, so you’ll often see dinghies and sailboats skimming across the water on breezy days. While swimming isn’t recommended due to currents, the shallow shoreline is ideal for paddling. Behind the beach, a line of sand dunes provides shelter and space to explore, as well as access to the popular Tarka Trail for walking and cycling. With a handful of pubs, cafés and a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere, Instow Beach is the sort of place where time seems to slow down—perfect for a peaceful day on the North Devon coast.
