Lydford Gorge

Lydford

The deepest river gorge in the South West, with 30m high waterfall.

Adventure through the temperate rainforest at Lydford Gorge. Admire the towering Whitelady Waterfall at almost 30 metres high. It changes with the weather and the seasons from a gentle cascade to a raging flow. Descend into the deepest part of the gorge to explore fascinating rock formations carved out by the River Lyd and brave the narrow rock steps to enter the Devil's Cauldron pothole on a platform over the water.

There are two main walking trails that take you down into the gorge. These can be linked together either with a two-way hike through the woodland, or you can drive between them. The friendly welcome team will explain the map and give advice on the best option for you. In spring the gorge is filled with colourful wild flowers, and the scents range from subtle to pungent. In summer the river comes alive with dragonflies and damselflies flitting in jewel-bright colours across the water. In autumn the trees really put on a show turning from deep green to golden browns, reds and oranges.

- Open March to October, we recommend checking the Lydford Gorge National Trust website before visiting as we occasionally close for safety. Limited opening in winter.

- Dogs are welcome everywhere, please keep them on a short lead at all times, and out of the river.

- Two tea-rooms, one at each entrance.

- Picnics welcome, tables at both entrances or choose a wilder spot in the orchard meadow.

- A large second-hand bookshop at the Devil's Cauldron entrance.

- Free nature spotter sheets available to pick up from Visitor welcome.
