Torre Abbey Historic House & Gardens

Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930.

Historic House

A clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide to discover many hidden mysteries.

Galleries at Torre Abbey include:

  • Battle Scenes Gallery
  • Green & Pleasant Land Gallery
  • Portraits
  • Burne-Jones Gallery
  • How Artists Work
  • Artists Abroad
  • The Grand Tour
  • Seaside Fun
  • The Call Of The Sea
  • Thrupp Gallery

Gardens

With a wealth of exotic plants, the gardens are a tranquil haven of beauty and pleasure and the perfect setting in which to relax, stroll or picnic. Children can explore the garden and bring the Abbey to life using our special discovery backpacks.

Agatha Christie's Potent Plants Display
Celebrating Torquay’s most famous resident, the Queen of Crime herself, this unique feature is based entirely on plants that appear in Agatha Christie’s novels and stories. Here, not surprisingly, there are plenty of horticultural nasties to be found and much to be learnt about the poisonous secrets of some of our best- known garden flowers. Sinister but fun!

Shop and Tearoom

Browse our shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books. Enjoy a wide selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearoom, seated either in the delightfully ‘shabby chic’ interior or outside with views towards the sea.
